We know that too well. A large number of the certificates basically say nothing because they are either too easy to get or can be bought. Some certificates do not thoroughly check the production of the paper. 

The Blue Angel, with which our paper is certified, is not one of them! It is probably the strictest certificate for sustainability worldwide and an independent mark of the German government. On the following website you can find out what Greenpeace says about the Blue Angel (this website is only available in german though).

The Blue Angel ensures that the paper is 100% recycled and low in toxins while being energy and water efficient. It also stands for health and safety at work.

Another environmental factor is the process used to bleach the paper. You can read more about this in the next question.

What else we do for the environment: In addition to our recycled paper made from 100% secondary fiber, our packaging is fully recyclable and plasticfree.

The technology for bleaching paper is very advanced these days. A difference between recycled and fresh fiber paper is hardly visible.

Isn't bleaching harmful to the environment?

Bleaching is harmful to the environment if it is done with chlorine. Chlorine-free bleaching, on the other hand... Stop: Chlorine-free is not the same as chlorine-free! Chlorine compounds such as chlorine dioxide are often used, which are also very harmful. The paper is then marketed as chlorine-free. 

Our paper is bleached without chlorine and also without chlorine compounds and is certified with the Blue Angel. This requires that the paper is bleached without chlorine, halogenated bleaching agents or other chemicals. Instead, bleaching takes place using oxygen compounds.

Compared to fresh fiber paper, recycled paper saves about 70% water and about 60% energy.
